How to Make Your Home More Secure

If you are away from your house for any prolonged periods, the security of your home may cross your mind on more than one occasion. With most people questioning whether they remembered to lock their doors and windows or set an alarm. Aside from relying on your neighbour to watch out for any suspicious activity, there are steps you can take to make your house more secure.

In a recent survey, Which? Asked the question, How does a burglar scope a house?  They went on to survey security experts and former burglars to find out what would deter someone from breaking in.

One of their key findings was that they would look for signs that the homeowner wasn’t security conscious. For example, their doors would only have a single cylinder or Yale lock or their windows wouldn’t have any locks. They would also look out for tell-tale signs, such as keys being left in doors and window locks, and check to see if sheds and outbuildings have been properly secured.
Becoming the victim of a burglary is a traumatic experience, and it can also be expensive to resolve.

We’ve written this article to share some of the tips and advice that we’ve picked up over the years, to try and make your home more secure:

Tip 1: Ensure your home looks occupied at all times

As well as conducting opportunistic burglaries, some burglars will scope out a property before coming back at a later date or time. Make sure there are no easy spaces for a burglar to hide to scope out the house and if you are away for any periods, try and make it look like someone is still home. Using lights on timers or getting a neighbour to park their car on your drive while you’re away can help to make it look like the house is still occupied.

Tip 2: Avoid mentioning any forthcoming holiday plans on social media

Your social media accounts might not be as private as you think they are. You wouldn’t think twice about not running down the road shouting “we’re going away!” Social media is a front door to the world, and If you tell the world you’re going away on holiday, don’t be surprised when a burglar pays your home a visit while you’re away. Also consider holding off on posting photos of your holiday snaps while you’re away and wait until you’re safely in the comfort of your own home before sharing them.

Tip 3: Don’t leave spare keys lying around

It’s good to have a spare key, but if they’re easy to find or easily visible, you’re asking for trouble. If you keep your spare key on the ledge above a door or underneath a plant pot, consider a key safe instead.

Tip 4: Invest in a home security system

Installing a home security system is a big deterrent to potential burglars. If an intruder sees a security system they will be more likely to move on to an easier target.

Tip 5: Upgrade your Door and Window locks

Simply locking your doors and windows may not be enough if you don’t have high-quality locks or the glass is easy to break. Invest in multipoint locking and make sure your door frames and hinges are strong enough to endure an attempted break-in. Older doors or exposed hinges may pose an unnecessary risk.
